Winter Weather Operations
Winter flying is absolutely possible with Capital Air Express, but colder weather introduces operational considerations that don't exist during much of the year. Freezing temperatures, low clouds, precipitation, snow and ice can affect not only the flight itself, but also airport and runway conditions, aircraft positioning, and the timing of your trip.
Our goal is always to complete your trip safely and as close to your planned schedule as possible. During the winter months, however, flexibility becomes especially important.
Icing & Our Aircraft
Our aircraft are not approved for flight into known icing conditions. This does not mean we cannot fly when it is cold, when there is snow on the ground, or even when winter weather exists elsewhere in the region. It means that we cannot intentionally operate through atmospheric conditions where ice is known or expected to accumulate on the aircraft.
Icing is not always obvious from the ground. It can occur when temperatures aloft are near or below freezing and the aircraft encounters visible moisture such as clouds or precipitation. As a result, a cold but clear day may be perfectly flyable, while a seemingly mild, cloudy day can present a greater concern.
Our pilots and Operations team evaluate the complete weather picture for each flight, including temperatures at different altitudes, cloud layers, precipitation, forecasts, pilot reports, terrain, and available routing.
Mountain Flying in Winter
Mountain destinations require additional consideration during the winter. Temperatures are generally colder at altitude, weather can change rapidly, and clouds or precipitation combined with terrain can significantly reduce the routes available to safely reach an airport.
Mountain airports can also experience localized conditions that are very different from surrounding areas. Snow, ice, low ceilings, strong winds, or a weather system sitting over higher terrain may make an airport inaccessible even when conditions at your departure point—or even a nearby city—look perfectly reasonable.
For winter trips into mountainous areas, we particularly encourage customers to avoid extremely tight schedules and allow some flexibility around arrival and departure times.
Snow & Airport Conditions
Snow itself does not automatically mean your flight will be cancelled. What matters is the condition of the airport, runway and surrounding weather.
Smaller regional airports may not have the same snow-removal equipment, staffing, deicing resources, or around-the-clock winter operations as major commercial airports. A runway may temporarily close for plowing, remain contaminated by snow or ice, or have conditions that make it unsuitable for our aircraft.
Because one of the advantages of flying with Capital Air is access to smaller airports, this can become an important consideration during winter weather. In some cases, Operations may recommend a different nearby airport with better runway conditions or winter services.
Why Winter Weather Decisions May Happen Late
We understand that uncertainty is frustrating, but winter weather decisions often cannot responsibly be made several days in advance.
Forecasts give us an important planning tool, but the conditions that determine whether a particular flight can safely operate may depend on temperatures, cloud layers, precipitation and airport conditions at the actual time of departure. Those details become considerably clearer as the flight gets closer.
For that reason, we may continue monitoring a questionable flight rather than cancelling it based solely on an early forecast. Conversely, a flight that looked promising the day before may need to change if actual conditions develop differently than expected.
Delays, Schedule Changes & Alternate Airports
When winter weather affects a trip, cancellation is not always the first or only option. Depending on the circumstances, we may recommend departing earlier or later, waiting for conditions to improve, adjusting the route, or using another suitable airport.
Sometimes a difference of a few hours can make a significant difference in winter weather conditions. When possible, our Operations team will work with you to find a safe and practical way to complete your trip.
However, there will be occasions when there simply isn't a safe or reasonable option. If conditions are not appropriate for the aircraft, the flight will not operate.
Build Flexibility Into Important Trips
If you absolutely must be somewhere by a particular time—a wedding, sporting event, important meeting, holiday gathering, cruise departure, or other time-sensitive commitment—we strongly recommend building extra time into winter travel.
This is particularly important for same-day round trips and trips into areas where winter weather is forecast. A flight may depart successfully in the morning but encounter very different conditions when it is time to return later that day.
Whenever missing the event or commitment would have significant consequences, consider traveling earlier rather than planning around the narrowest possible window.
Weather Cancellations
There are no cancellation fees or penalties when a flight is cancelled due to weather. Payments are not refunded for weather cancellations; instead, the full applicable credit remains on your account for future travel in accordance with our Terms & Conditions.
Weather-related operational decisions are made based on safety and the conditions affecting the flight—not on whether a customer would prefer to proceed. The final decision regarding whether a flight can safely operate always rests with Capital Air Express and the pilot in command.
Safety Comes First
We know our customers make plans around their flights, and we don't take disruptions lightly. Our Operations team and pilots will make every reasonable effort to complete your trip when conditions allow.
At the same time, winter weather is one area where flexibility is part of private aviation. We will not push a flight into conditions that aren't appropriate for our aircraft simply to keep a schedule.
If you're planning winter travel, especially to a mountain destination or for an event where your arrival time is critical, please talk with our team when booking. Understanding your plans gives us the opportunity to help you build an itinerary with a little extra margin when conditions warrant it.
